Overview of Our Budgeting Process

In our previous blog post, we explained our two-step approach to budgeting: starting with a top-down estimate and then refining it with a bottom-up calculation. This method helped us create a realistic and comprehensive budget that accounted for our travel style and preferences. Read it here.

We plan to visit a variety of countries, each with its unique costs. The total budget came out to €35.4k per person (€70.8k for both), which in USD is approximately $38.4k per person (~$76.8k for both).

Factors that Influenced Our Budget

As you can see, travel style and time of visit meticulously influenced our budget. But how do we define these travel styles?

Budget Boujee Backpackers: This style balances cost and comfort. We stay in budget hostels, dorms, and private rooms, and also occasionally sleep at friends' places or use Couchsurfing. We cook meals from supermarket ingredients or eat where the locals go, and occasionally treat ourselves to a nicer meal or experience.

Mid-Range Boujee Backpackers: This style strikes a balance between comfort and cost. We stay in good hostels, preferably in private rooms, enjoying a mix of privacy and social opportunities. We eat at a variety of local food stalls and mid-range restaurants, with occasional splurges on unique dining experiences and activities.

Luxury Boujee Backpackers: This style emphasizes maximum comfort and convenience. We stay in upscale hostels, Airbnb, and occasionally luxury hotels. Our dining includes a mix of high-quality local restaurants and occasional fine-dining experiences, and we indulge in exclusive experiences and premium activities without hesitation.
